About Howell Timber Frame

A man wearing a cap, plaid shirt, and apron using a circular saw on a wooden beam outdoors among trees.

William Charles Howell, my father, started this company in 1981. He was the first full time timber framer in the state of Kentucky. A man of great integrity. My father began as a conventional framer, and after reading some timber frame literature, decided that he wanted to give timber framing a try. After some visits and correspondence with some esteemed timber framers, He started Howell Timber Frame. His eye for elegance and design has lead to many noteworthy projects.

I started my training with my dad from a young age and journeyed out to Oregon to further my timber framing expertise under a large timber framing crew on the West Coast. After about ten years of timber framing, I felt the pull to go into the family business as well. So here we are. Howell Timber Frame LLC is now located in Jeromesville, Ohio, and we love what we do. The thing that most sets Howell Timber Frame apart from many other crews is our attention to detail and the thought and care that we put into all of our hand cuts. We want each home that we build to be better than the last, and can guarantee that our dedication to our craft will not waiver. Your frame will be unique to you and your family. That’s hard to beat.

What sets us apart?

What sets Howell Timber Frame apart is our commitment to true craftsmanship. Every piece we create is cut and assembled entirely by hand—no CNC machines are ever used. All joinery is fully housed whenever possible, with traditional mortise and tenon connections, and screws used only when necessary or specified by an architect. Each frame is uniquely designed and built to order—nothing is pre-made or mass-produced.

We take pride in sourcing the highest quality materials, using FOHC (Free of Heart Center) timbers to minimize checking and movement, ensuring straighter and stronger beams.

No matter the scope of your project, we’ll take the time to sit down with you, listen to your ideas, and work together until we share a clear vision. At Howell Timber Frame, we build with Quality, Character, and Durability—and you can see it in every frame we craft.
