Frequently Asked Questions
-
Timber frame homes, accents, outdoor structures, and custom builds.
-
Howell Timber Frame does not own a CNC machine to cut timbers in mass quantities like bigger companies may. Everything is cut, chiseled and assembled by hand. Lending precision, character and uniqueness that is hard to get with generic buy to ship frames.
-
There are many factors that influence the overall cost of a timber frame. These include, but aren’t limited to, the size and scope of the frame, the wood species, the complexity of the joinery, the type of finish or oil used, and more. As a general rule, a timber frame typically costs about one-third more than a traditional stick-built structure of the same size and scope.
-
Howell Timber Frame works with a variety of wood species, including Cedar, Western Red Cedar, Port Orford Cedar, White Oak, White Pine, Douglas Fir, Hemlock, and Walnut. Among these, our preferred species is Douglas Fir for its excellent strength-to-weight ratio and overall stability.
We also make it a priority to use FOHC (Free of Heart Center) timbers whenever possible. This type of cut produces straighter grain, reduces checking and movement, and results in a more stable and workable material — ensuring both beauty and durability in every frame we build.
